Newsletter - Summer 2008

Music from the Big Screen is the main theme of our summer concert, which will feature several cinema classics. They'll include the rousing score by Vangelis for 1492 Conquest of Paradise, the story of Columbus's discovery of America; the folk-song Down to the River to Pray, used in the comedy O Brother Where Art Thou; and Agnus Dei, a choral arrangement of Samuel Barber's famous Adagio for Strings, which has featured in a number of films, most notably Platoon. Guest performers for the evening will be the jazz musicians Jonathan Salt and Ben Holder.

The concert takes place on Saturday 5th July, at 7.30 pm, at the Scout Headquarters. Tickets at £8 and £6 - to include cheese and wine - will be available from Starbucks newsagents or on the door. Book or come early, as demand is bound to be high.

Newsletter - Spring 2008

We are busy preparing for our popular annual concert of Christmas carols, music and readings. It will have two performances. The first will be on Saturday 8th December, at St.Mary's Parish Church, Newton Solney. The second will be here in the village, on Wednesday 19th December at the Methodist Chapel in Chapel Lane. Both concerts will start at 7.30 pm. Tickets available on the door. Please come early to avoid disappointment.

The choir has also announced an annual bursary for young musicians, in memory of our late conductor Peter Vernon, who died in July. The award - of £150 a year - is being organised by Burton and District Arts Council, and is designed to help promising youngsters meet the cost of such expenses as buying instruments or attending auditions. It's hoped to have the scheme up and running next year.
